THE 1ST BASTIONS
OF THATCH ROOFING
IN AMERICA

A.C.E. Thatch & Bamboo, Inc.

A global brand

Our owner and founder, Val Deer, is the original Thatch Roof guy here in the United States. A certified Master Thatcher, he practically invented modern-day thatching when he started his life’s work with his first thatch roof structure way back in 1973.

Val has trained our team to be the best group of thatch hand craftsmen and women in the world. We don’t just do thatch roofing, we create Designer Thatch. The perfection of the finished product is always paramount. Every project is different, presenting new challenges. How we adapt and evolve with each new project is what keeps us Number One. Our shared passion for thatching excellence is what delivers our outstanding finished product, with Val still personally overseeing every project.

Our work features projects at most zoos around the world, many theme parks, hotel chains, resorts, and private homes. Val is so instrumental in this industry that he even created the installation and inspection guidelines for thatch roofing in America.

We start the process by selecting our thatch material for quality, sustainability, and durability. We determine each roof’s individual character by sourcing thatch by type, region, locale, the time of year we harvest, by size, length, and diameter, knowing all will determine the nature of the finished product.

The basics of thatching haven’t changed in centuries, the world over. Using plant material as a roof was always the best way to make your building weatherproof. Warm in the winter yet cool in the summer, the natural properties of the plant repel water, and its light enough for even the most humble of structures – making it perfect for both tropical and temperate climates.

We create layers of thatch held in place by fixings. Bundles of reeds are attached to the roof timbers to create a single layered roof. This is then used as a base on which to fix new bundles, held in place by pointed wooden pegs. Each course must then protect the fixings of the course below it. A final ridgeline hides the top fittings and is often hand cut into a decorative shape, with each layer of thatch about 12 inches thick.

Our clients know us as handcrafters who create exceptional long-lasting thatch roof structures within budget, safely, and on time.

When you want the highest quality Thatch Artisans in the world, you contact us.

We live for thatch; it is a part of us. We feel grateful for the opportunity to create the living art we love all over the world.
